Yorkie Grooming At Home

Yorkie grooming is often done by professional groomers every six to eight weeks.

“But Yorkie owners have to learn grooming Yorkshire terriers at home as well.”

The difficult job about grooming a Yorkie is the actual clipping and trimming of the Yorkie coat.

Dog grooming should begin as soon as your new puppy is comfortable in your home, which normally takes a week or two weeks.

How To Groom A Yorkie

Get him used to the table where you want to brush him or clip his nails.  This may take some time, and there may be some mishaps in between, like an uneven cut of the coat, but continue to give him the “table training” at home, as this is one of the basic trainings of how to groom a Yorkie.

Once every two weeks your Yorkie should be given a bath, otherwise the dirt will cause mats and tangles.  The coat has to be brushed well and if there is any mat or knot they deserve gentle treatment.  A good mat rake may keep away the mats, and so will daily brushing of the coat.

Regular coat care is a part of Yorkie grooming, but brushing of the furry coat should be done with doggie and not human products.  When giving your Yorkie a bath, use special Coat Care products, and never use human bath products, as the PH levels are different and are totally unsuitable for Yorkie’s skin or coat.

After the bath the toenails can be trimmed, because they are then softer and easier.  If there is slight bleeding, there is no need to panic, but if it is too much for you to handle, leave it to the professional groomer or vet.  But Yorkie nails grow extremely fast, so you must learn how to clip them in course of time, and save money too.

Grooming Yorkshire Terriers At HomeIt is imperative to get Yorkshire terriers professionally groomed on a regular basis.  Before you buy a Yorkie, you must consider the cost of professional grooming, because it is relatively high.  If you cannot afford to visit professional grooming schools, you should consider taking another dog breed which does not require this kind of dedication to grooming.

How often you take your Yorkie to the professional groomer depends on how long you want his or her coat.  Many show-dogs have floor-length manes and hence require frequent grooming and combing.  But if you decide to have your Yorkie’s hair clipped short, it reduces the time spent grooming at home in between visits to the professional groomer.

Besides these factors it is important to develop a bonding with your Yorkie and that is the time that you spend with him, just running your hands over your dog’s body while you are grooming the dog.   This kind of concentrated attention is loved by all dogs, especially the Yorkies.

If you buy a Westie, the grooming routines can start from the day you bring the pup home.  Westie grooming requires immense patience and if they are handled heavily and shouted at, the Westie never learns.

You can actually visit some dog grooming school if you want to learn the basics of pet grooming.  Of course you must have a sincere love for animals, but besides you can just learn it to enjoy your own dogs or even take it up as a profession to groom pets.
