Learning About Grooming Yorkshire Terriers At Home
Anyone who has ever seen a Yorkshire Terrier immediately falls in love with it. It’s nickname, Yorkie, reflects its place of origin which was Yorkshire, England. Small in size, it is a very popular pet all over the world. It needs to be properly cared for so it’s important to learn about grooming yorkshire terriers at home.

As with any pet, the conscientious person wishes to give them the very best possible care. This dog is small and very loving. It does not do well in cool weather and should always have some kind of a covering if taken outside when the weather is unfavorable.
The Yorkies require more extensive grooming than most dogs. It cannot be groomed once in awhile but must have daily as well as monthly care. Many people do not wish to take it to a groomer but prefer to take care of it at home. This goes a long ways in establishing a bond between the dog and its owner. With the long hair, care should be taken to see that it does not fall in their eyes. Some people clip this hair, others simply tie it back.
The terrier’s coat needs constant care if it is to maintain its long silky texture. If the coat is kept long it can have breakage without proper care. Some people use oil on the coat to keep it soft and shining but this can sometimes lead to problems with staining the carpet or furniture. There are certain shampoos and conditioners on the market, which will keep the coat in good condition.
These animals must be brushed daily, bathed once a month and carefully groomed. Many people find that maintaining the long hair is too difficult so cut it short to make it more convenient to care for. If left long it still must be cut periodically as it will reach the floor and keep growing.
In clipping, it is important that the area around the anus be kept short as the hair tends to matted in this area and can result in a blocked bowel or other problems that may require veterinary services. This must be done on a regular basis, preferably when giving the monthly bath. Because they do not have an undercoat, they do not shed hair which is a desirable trait with many people.
The dogs have small ears, which require hair trimming to prevent the hair’s weight from causing them to droop. This hair should be cut very short on top and inside of the ears. At the same time, checking the inside of the ear for mites or other problems is recommended. Hair on the feet should also be trimmed at this time.
There is no doubt that a dog of this type can bring a lot of pleasure to a family and grooming Yorkshire terriers at home is not difficult to do. The time it takes to do this will be returned many times over with the love that is offered, unconditionally, by this little animal.
